An Overview of AI and ChatGPT
Here’s what you need to understand
Let’s face it, AI and ChatGPT are everywhere in the news. Some people are happy about this, others are fearful. This article provides an overview in three parts.
Part 1 – What is AI? How does ChatGPT fit in? How is ChatGPT different from a Google search?
Part 2 – What are the social implications of ChatGPT and AI?
Part 3 – An example of a story written by ChatGPT
I have used Yellow and Red highlighting for parts of each article that I thought were of particular importance.
Part 1 –
What is AI and How Does Chat GPT Fit in?
When people think of AI (artificial intelligence) they think of it as a single blob. What is critical is to recognize the different types of AI. A comparison could be made to crypto currencies. Many people just think of “crypto” as a blob. What is essential is to understand the differences between BitCoin, Ethereum and Altcoins.
ChatGPT is an example of one type of AI and has nothing to do with “self-aware AI”. Also, while ChatGPT can be used in various ways, for most people only two are the most common.
Finally, people are used to using Google and other search engines to answer questions As shown in the article, this produces links, references and lists that the user needs to wade through and figure out. In contrast, ChatGPT produces a coherent written response in seconds.

Part 2 –
What Are the Social Implications of
ChatGPT and AI
Once you understand the various types of AI, you can see that overall social implications of AI is broad. The social implications of ChatGPT are still significant but by definition are more limited.

An Example of ChatGPT Writing a Story
Sometimes I ask my grandkids if they would like me to write a story for them. I ask them various questions about the story: who is the story about? Where do they live? What are they doing? What happens in the story? Then I enter this information into ChatGPT and in five seconds the story appears.
In one case the instructions were “write a story was about a boy on a beach. While meandering on the beach he meets Scoobie which is a place in his head. “
I couldn’t image what ChatGPT could come up with and was truly surprised and pleased.
Also, many users don’t know that you can ask ChatGPT to add to and extend your story after the first version.

The AI market is likely to change significantly every six months.
Self-driving Cars and ChatGPT are examples of “Limited Memory AI”.
“Artificial General Intelligence AI” and “Self-aware AI” does not exist today.
As a new tool for mankind. AI can be used for good or evil. I agree with Elon Musk that we should proactively create a Federal Government Agency to oversee and regulate the AI industry for the public good. We have such agencies for other industries.
